Parent Information
iReady Requirements
Students are required to complete at least 2 iReady Math lessons and 2 iReady Reading lessons each week (with a score of 80 or above). Students have multiple times each day to work on i-Ready lessons. These lessons can be completed during arrival, FLEx Time, class time, or a combination of these times each school day. A student may also work on these lessons at home. The effort students put into this program definitely impacts the amount of progress students make in math each school year.
GRADES
Please check the parent portal frequently to stay up to date on how your child is progressing in each academic subject. Third quarter grades will be available in the parent portal on Friday, March 15th.

Study Guides
Please have your child begin reviewing ALL the attached science study guides. 5th grade is the first year that students take the Science Milestones. This test covers quite a lot of material. All the study guides we've used thus far are attached below.

Units of Study
Each week, I will give you a description of what we'll be learning in the upcoming week. I will also list the specific curriculum standards that apply to these units of study. The standards will be updated regularly as we move through units in math, social studies, and science. We have math every day and rotate between units in social studies and science. So, you will always see math standards here and then either social studies or science standards (depending on which of those two subjects we are currently studying.)
MATH
We are well underway with Unit 7 - Exploring Geometry and the Coordinate Plane. This unit involves the classification of polygons, graphing, and discovering/extending patterns with input/output tables. We will continue our work with classification of polygons this week. Our first quiz on this unit with be Thursday, April 11th, and it will cover 2D shapes.
Here is a more detailed description of this unit...
In this unit, students are introduced to the structure of the coordinate grid, and the convention and notation of coordinates to name points. This unit also offers students an opportunity to build on their understanding of shapes by classifying polygons based on their properties. In their work with patterns, students generate two different numerical patterns, and identify relationships between the corresponding terms within those patterns.
The standards and learning objectives for Unit 7 - Exploring Geometry and the Coordinate Plane are as follows:
Helpful Hints for Supporting Your Child in 5th Grade Math:
Parents always inquire as to how they can support their child in math. I'll make two suggestions here that will help your child be successful right from the start.
1) If your child has not mastered their multiplication tables through the twelves, now is the time to work on those basic math facts. Our biggest units in 5th grade are related to decimals and fractions. On a regular basis, students will be working with problems that involve multiple steps. Students who have the greatest challenges with the 5th grade math curriculum are those who are still struggling with their basic math facts along with trying to learn all the new steps involved in decimal and fraction work. Students who have a good mastery of basic math facts do well and pick up on these new concepts more quickly.
2) Completion of math homework assignments is extremely important. The 5th grade math curriculum is quite broad. Therefore, we must move at what may feel like a quicker pace than in 4th grade. We either cover a new concept each day or add steps to the lesson we learned the day before. Therefore, it is very important that your child takes the opportunity to practice what we've learned that day before we move on to the next day's lesson. As we pick up our pace of instruction in the next several weeks, math homework will be assigned approximately three nights a week. I try to be as reasonable as possible with the number of problems assigned. My goal is to select just enough practice to reinforce what we've learned that day in class. It is the responsibility of all 5th graders to write down homework assignments in their agenda each day. Please check your child's agenda nightly to see if they have homework. (I believe in enjoying family and friends on the weekends, The only time I would ask your family to work on math on the weekend is if your child has fallen behind during the week.)
SOCIAL STUDIES

SCIENCE
We have now wrapped up our study of the classification of plants and animals. Believe it or not, we are moving on to the final unit in 5th grade science which is Inherited Traits. This is a very short unit, so we decided to go ahead and complete this unit before switching back to social studies.
Please note that all the study guides for 5th grade science are posted in the "Study Guide" section here on the web page. The Science Milestones covers a great deal of material, and this is the first time that students will have taken the Milestones in science. We have approximately 4 school weeks to go before the Science Milestones. It is very important that students spend time reviewing all of these study guides at home in addition to our classroom review activities.

- 5.PAR.6.1 Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms by completing a table.
- 5.PAR.6.2 Represent problems by plotting ordered pairs and explain coordinate values of points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
- 5.GSR.8 Examine properties of polygons and rectangular prisms, classify polygons by their properties, and discover volume of right rectangular prisms.
- 5.GSR.8.1 Classify, compare, and contrast polygons based on properties.
- 5.GSR.8.2 Determine, through exploration and investigation, that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
